LIPS LIKE SUGAR

April sees a major change in the drinks industry, with the introduction of the sugar tax.

We thought we would provide some information to help you to understand the consequences, and how it will affect you through pricing. This increase is applied at source, so you will see an increase in the price of affected products that you buy from us.

I’m sure you will have noticed recently that some bigger companies are changing their formulas, which seems to have caused outrage, at least in the press! Greencity tries to offer products with natural ingredients, and although there are well documented links between sugar and obesity (and the long term cost of this), we are also very aware of the dangers of artificial sweeteners, and try to avoid these when possible.

The tax will be imposed at the point of production or importation, in two bands. Drinks with total sugar content above 5g per 100 millilitres will be taxed at 18p per litre, and drinks above 8g per 100 millilitres at 24p per litre. The indication so far is that the drinks involved will rise between 0.07-0.13p per small bottle/can. Fruit juices are exempt from the increase.

There are also other soft drinks that are exempt from this tax. Brands such as Juicy Fuel Cola (which is one of your five a day) and Charitea, a cold brew tea (also VAT exempt). Local kombucha brewers Left Field and Clever Kombucha are also both exempt, with their drinks offering extra health benefits from the fermentation process.
